Deputy Minister of the Prime Minister’s Office. He served as Israel’s ambassador to the United States from 2009 to 2013. He is a Doctor of History from Princeton University and an Israeli politician. Oren is a member of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee; the Constitution, Law and Justice Committee; and the Committee for Immigration and Absorption. Immigrated to Israel in 1979. He joined the IDF as a lone soldier and served as a combatant in the Paratroopers, among others, during the First Lebanon War.
During the Gulf War he served as Israel’s liaison officer with the US Sixth Fleet. In the early 1980s, the state sent him to the Soviet Union to assist the activities of the Zionist underground. In 2006, during the Second Lebanon War, he served as a major in the reserves.
During Operation Cast Lead in the Gaza Strip, he was again recruited for reserve duty and was involved in public relations with the foreign media networks.
In 2009 he was appointed Israel’s ambassador to the United States serving until 2013.
He was the Abba Eban Chair for the Study of Israel’s Foreign Policy at IDC Herzliya.
In January 2014, he was appointed Middle East commentator for CNN, but during the Tzuk Eitan campaign, he chose to waive his contract with the station in order to serve as a spokesperson in all foreign media on behalf of Israel and the IDF.
Over the years he has published bestsellers, articles and essays on the history of the Middle East, and has served as a senior fellow at the Shalem Center in Jerusalem and as a contributing editor in the New Republic.
The prestigious Washington Institute for Middle East Policy, awarded him the prestigious Scholar-Statesman Award in 2014.
He serves as Israel’s representative to the Taglit-Birthright Steering Committee, an honorary member of the board of directors of the Joint Distribution Committee and an international chairman of the “HESEG” foundation which grants scholarships to lone soldiers.
Oren is a father of three, and grandfather to three grandchildren.
