The proposed bill, entitled “Proposed Liability Law for Renovations,” states that any renovation work in the amount of more than NIS 44,000 will be the responsibility of the contractor. In other words, from the moment the law is approved, every renovation contractor will have to make a one-year warranty for repair or renovation.
The law further proposes that in the event that the said liability is not determined in advance between the customer and the professional, the renovation contractor will have to comply with the terms of the Sale of Apartments Law, i.e., a liability similar to the liability that a contractor grants for the sale of a new apartment.
“This is a consumer law that comes in order to settle this issue,” MK Folkman said after the Knesset Economic Affairs Committee meeting, “Today, a renovation contractor is not obligated to anything. The burden of proof today is on the applicant. He is the one who has to prove that the work was not right, both in front of the renovation contractor and in front of the court, if things get there. After the bill is passed, this situation will change, when the burden of proof falls on the contractor”.
This bill will apply to any renovation contractor, with or without a license, and in all areas of renovations without exception.
